2005 Kashmir earthquake

8 October 2005

The 2005 Kashmir earthquake, also called the Kashmir earthquake or the South Asia earthquake, was a very strong earthquake of magnitude about 7.6 that struck the mountainous region of northern Pakistan on the morning of 8 October. Its epicentre was near Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and it was caused by movement on the thrust faults along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Entire towns and villages collapsed, many schools among them, and landslides cut off roads in the Himalayan foothills. It killed tens of thousands of people, with the toll commonly estimated at over 80,000, and left millions homeless as winter approached. A large international relief effort followed, and Pakistan set up an earthquake reconstruction authority.
