Release of Waray Wikipedia

25 September 2005

The Waray-language edition of Wikipedia is written in Waray, a language spoken in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, mainly on the islands of Samar and Leyte. It opened in 2005 and is a small project in terms of the number of active editors. It is nonetheless known as one of the Wikipedias with a very large article count, because a great number of short articles on places and species were generated automatically by a bot. The edition illustrates the debate in the Wikimedia community about the value of machine-generated articles and about how to support smaller languages. Cebuano Wikipedia and Swedish Wikipedia also have many bot-created articles.
