Discovery of Vanth

13 November 2005

Vanth is the moon of Orcus, a large trans-Neptunian object that orbits the Sun in the Kuiper belt, in a resonance with Neptune similar to Pluto's, which has led to Orcus being called an anti-Pluto. Vanth was discovered by Michael Brown and Terry-Ann Suer in images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It is named after a winged female spirit of the underworld in Etruscan mythology, who guided the souls of the dead, which fits the name Orcus, a Roman god of the underworld. The two bodies orbit around a common centre of mass, and studies of the pair give estimates of their masses and compositions.
