Czechoslovakia was a state in Central Europe that was declared in Prague as the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed at the end of the First World War, uniting the Czech lands with Slovakia under its first president, Tomas Masaryk. It was the only democracy in the region during the interwar years and was highly industrialised. The Munich Agreement of 1938 forced it to cede the Sudetenland to Germany, and the rest of the country was occupied in 1939. After the war it fell under communist rule in 1948, and the Prague Spring reform movement of 1968 was crushed by a Warsaw Pact invasion. The Velvet Revolution of 1989 ended communism, and the country split peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
