Yugoslavia

from 1 December 1918 to 27 April 1992

Yugoslavia was a country in Southeastern Europe that emerged from the First World War as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, uniting South Slavic peoples, and was renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. It was invaded by the Axis powers in 1941, and after the Second World War the communist partisan leader Josip Broz Tito led it as a socialist federation of six republics. Tito pursued a non-aligned course between the Cold War blocs. After his death in 1980 economic troubles and nationalism grew, and in 1991 the federation began to break apart in a series of wars. The shorter state that continued under the name Yugoslavia, formed in 1992, ended in 2003 when it was renamed Serbia and Montenegro.
