War of Attrition

from 1 July 1967 to 7 August 1970

The War of Attrition was a limited conflict between Israel and Egypt, with Syria and Jordan also involved, fought along the Suez Canal after the Six-Day War of 1967. Egypt's president Nasser sought to wear Israel down and force its withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula through artillery duels, commando raids and air battles. Israel built the Bar-Lev Line of fortifications along the canal and later carried out deep air raids on Egypt. The Soviet Union sent advisers, pilots and air-defense missiles to Egypt in response. A ceasefire based on a US proposal ended the fighting, without resolving the territorial dispute. Nasser died soon afterward, and his successor Sadat went to war again in 1973.
