Founding of World Intellectual Property Organization

14 July 1967

The World Intellectual Property Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations that promotes the protection of intellectual property such as patents, trademarks, copyright and designs. It was established by a convention signed in Stockholm, which came into force in 1970, and it became a UN agency in 1974. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland. It builds on earlier treaties, including the Paris Convention on industrial property and the Berne Convention on literary and artistic works, and it manages international systems for filing patents and trademarks across many countries at once. It also helps countries develop their own intellectual property laws and serves as a forum for negotiating new treaties.
