Founding of Taipei

1 July 1967

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan and its main political, economic and cultural centre, located in the north of the island in a basin around the Tamsui River. Chinese settlement grew there from the early eighteenth century, and the Qing government made Taipei the provincial capital in the 1880s, with the Japanese administration expanding it during their rule from 1895. After the Chinese Civil War the Republic of China government moved there in 1949 and made it the provisional capital. In July 1967 it was upgraded to a special municipality, a status that placed it directly under the central government, and its area was enlarged. The city is known for its technology industry, night markets and the Taipei 101 skyscraper.
