Launch of Mariner 5

14 June 1967

Mariner 5 was an American space probe launched toward Venus. It was originally built as a spare for Mariner 4's mission to Mars, and when that mission succeeded, it was modified and sent to Venus instead. It passed close to the planet in October 1967, a day after the Soviet probe Venera 4 entered the planet's atmosphere. Mariner 5's instruments measured the Venusian atmosphere by radio signals passing through it, as well as magnetic fields and charged particles. The results showed that the atmosphere is much denser and hotter than scientists had thought, and that the planet has no significant magnetic field. Together with Venera 4, the data transformed the understanding of Venus.
