Founding of Valencia CF

18 March 1919

Valencia CF is a Spanish football club from the city of Valencia, based at the Mestalla stadium and nicknamed Los Che, or the bats, after the bat on its crest. It has won La Liga six times, including in 2001–02 and 2003–04 under Rafael Benítez, who also guided it to the UEFA Cup in 2004. Valencia reached two consecutive Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001, losing to Real Madrid and then to Bayern Munich on penalties. The club also has a strong record in the Copa del Rey and won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1980. It was bought in 2014 by the Singaporean businessman Peter Lim, and a long-delayed project for a new stadium has been under construction.
