The Irish War of Independence was a guerrilla war fought between the Irish Republican Army and British forces in Ireland, which followed the declaration of an Irish Republic by the Dáil in January 1919. The IRA, led in military intelligence and organization by Michael Collins, attacked police and military targets, and Britain responded by sending in reinforcements such as the Black and Tans. Notable events included the killing of civilians at Croke Park on Bloody Sunday in November 1920 and the burning of Cork. A truce was agreed in July 1921, and negotiations led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which created the Irish Free State but divided the republican movement and led to a civil war.
