Ukrainian People's Republic

from 7 November 1917 to 18 March 1921

The Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed by the Central Rada in Kyiv, a council led by the historian Mykhailo Hrushevsky, after the fall of the Russian Empire. At first it sought autonomy within a Russian federation, but declared full independence early in 1918, and signed a separate peace with the Central Powers at Brest-Litovsk. It was then replaced for a time by the Hetmanate of Pavlo Skoropadsky, before the Directory under Symon Petliura restored the republic. Its forces fought wars against the Bolsheviks, Poland and White Russians, and in 1919 it joined with the West Ukrainian People's Republic. It was defeated and divided between Poland and Soviet Russia by the Treaty of Riga, but a government in exile kept its legacy alive.
