The Balfour Declaration

2 November 1917

On 2 November 1917, the British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour sent a letter to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, stating that the government viewed 'with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people', on the understanding that nothing should prejudice the rights of existing non-Jewish communities. Britain, at war with the Ottomans, hoped for support from Jews in America and Russia. It had also promised Arab leaders independence in correspondence with Hussein. The League of Nations gave Britain the Mandate for Palestine in 1922, and the declaration lies at the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
