Ukrainian War of Independence

from 8 November 1917 to 17 November 1921

The Ukrainian War of Independence was a series of conflicts fought on the territory of Ukraine following the collapse of the Russian Empire. After the revolution of 1917, a Central Rada was formed in Kyiv and proclaimed the Ukrainian People's Republic, which soon came into conflict with the Bolsheviks. The country was occupied by Germany and Austria-Hungary under the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, then run by a conservative Hetmanate, and later by a Directorate under Symon Petliura. Ukrainian forces fought against the Red Army, the White Army, Polish troops and anarchist forces, amid political divisions and terrible violence against civilians, including pogroms. In the end, Ukraine was divided between Soviet Russia and Poland, and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was established.
