The Russian Civil War followed the Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917 and pitted the Red Army, led politically by Lenin and organised by Leon Trotsky, against a loose coalition of opponents known as the Whites, as well as nationalist, peasant and anarchist forces. Foreign powers, including Britain, France, Japan and the United States, intervened to varying degrees. White leaders such as Kolchak, Denikin and Wrangel were defeated by 1920, and fighting in the Far East ended in late 1922. The war, together with famine and epidemics, killed millions and devastated the country. The Bolshevik victory led to the founding of the Soviet Union at the end of 1922.
