The Sudanese civil war began on 15 April 2023, when fighting broke out in Khartoum between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces under General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The two men had worked together in the coup of 2021 that ended Sudan's transition to civilian rule, but fell out over plans to integrate the RSF into the army. The fighting spread from the capital to Darfur and other regions, with reports of ethnic violence and atrocities against civilians. It caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions of people displaced, many fleeing to neighboring countries, and widespread hunger. Efforts at mediation by regional and international actors produced no lasting ceasefire.
