The coronation of Charles III and his wife Camilla took place at Westminster Abbey in London, the first coronation of a British monarch in seventy years, since that of Queen Elizabeth II. Charles had become king when his mother died the previous September. The service, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, kept to the ancient rite, including the anointing of the king, which was hidden from the cameras, and the crowning with St Edward's Crown. Camilla was crowned as queen consort. The ceremony was shorter and smaller than that of 1953, and included the participation of leaders from other faiths and a new element of oaths of homage by the public. It was watched by millions around the world.
