Launch of Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer

14 April 2023

The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, usually called JUICE, is a mission of the European Space Agency to study Jupiter and its three large icy moons, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa, which are thought to hold subsurface oceans of liquid water. It was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou in French Guiana and will take about eight years to reach Jupiter, using a series of gravity-assist flybys of the Moon, Earth and Venus. After arriving in the early 2030s it will study the giant planet's atmosphere and magnetosphere and make a number of flybys of the moons. It is planned to enter orbit around Ganymede, the first time a moon other than our own has been orbited by a spacecraft.
