The 2023 Turkish presidential election was held on 14 May, with a runoff on 28 May because no candidate won a majority in the first round. It took place only a few months after the devastating February earthquakes in south-eastern Turkey and amid high inflation. The incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in power since 2003 as prime minister and then president, faced Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who led a six-party opposition alliance. Erdoğan won the runoff with roughly 52 per cent of the vote, extending his rule to a third decade. Parliamentary elections took place on the same day as the first round, and Erdoğan's alliance also kept a majority.
