Storm Daniel

September 2023

Storm Daniel was a powerful Mediterranean cyclone that brought extreme rainfall to Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey, before moving toward Libya. In Greece, it caused severe flooding in Thessaly, where rivers burst their banks and swamped farmland and towns. The worst disaster came in eastern Libya, where the storm intensified over warm sea water, a type of system sometimes called a medicane. Two dams above the city of Derna failed during the night, sending a wall of water through the city and washing away neighbourhoods. Thousands of people died or were reported missing. Poor maintenance of the dams and the political division of the country were widely blamed for the scale of the disaster.
