Launch of Luna 25

10 August 2023

Luna 25 was a Russian lunar lander, the first Russian mission to the Moon since Luna 24 in 1976, and a symbol of the revival of its space program. It was launched on a Soyuz rocket from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East, and aimed to land near the Moon's south pole, where scientists believe that water ice may lie in permanently shadowed craters. The craft reached lunar orbit and was preparing to descend, but a thruster burn went wrong, and it left its planned orbit and crashed on the lunar surface. A review commission blamed a flaw in the control unit. A successful landing was achieved shortly afterward by the Indian mission Chandrayaan-3, near the same region.
