Sino-Soviet border conflict

from 2 March 1969 to 11 September 1969

The Sino-Soviet border conflict was an undeclared series of military clashes between the Soviet Union and China, centered on disputed islands in the Ussuri River, especially Zhenbao Island, known to the Soviets as Damansky. On the first day Chinese soldiers ambushed Soviet border guards, and two weeks later the Soviets responded with artillery and tanks, causing heavy losses. Further clashes took place in Xinjiang in the summer. Soviet leaders considered a preemptive strike on China, including with nuclear weapons, but a meeting between Alexei Kosygin and Zhou Enlai at Beijing airport in September 1969 reduced the tension. The conflict deepened the Sino-Soviet split and pushed China toward its opening to the United States.
