Rise of Sudan People's Liberation Movement

1983

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement is a political party and former rebel movement in Sudan and South Sudan, led for most of its early history by John Garang. It began among southern officers and soldiers who rebelled against the government in Khartoum, and its armed wing was the Sudan People's Liberation Army. It fought the Second Sudanese Civil War, one of Africa's longest conflicts, over issues of autonomy, resources, religion and political marginalisation of the south. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 gave the south a referendum, and South Sudan became independent in 2011. The SPLM then governed the new country under Salva Kiir, but internal rivalries, notably with Riek Machar, helped to bring about a new civil war in 2013.
