Creation of ABAP

1983

ABAP is the programming language of the German software company SAP, used to write business applications on its platforms. The name comes from the German Allgemeiner Berichts-Aufbereitungs-Prozessor, meaning generic report preparation processor, because it was first intended for producing reports from SAP's accounting and logistics systems. As SAP's R/2 and R/3 systems grew, ABAP became a full programming language for developing the business logic, data processing and user interfaces. It was extended with object-oriented features, and today it is used in the SAP S/4HANA suite. Many large companies run their finance, manufacturing and human resources processes with programs written in ABAP.
