Origins of K League 1

1983

K League 1 is the top division of professional football in South Korea. The league was founded in the early 1980s, as one of the first professional football competitions in Asia, with a small group of clubs, some of which were owned by large Korean companies. The competition was known by various names and was reorganised several times, and since 2013 the top tier has carried its present name, with a second tier called K League 2 below it. Clubs such as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Ulsan HD, Pohang Steelers and FC Seoul have been among the most successful. Its champions and other sides take part in the AFC Champions League, the continent's top club competition.
