Rise of Zapatista Army of National Liberation

1983

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation, known by its Spanish initials EZLN, is a left-wing political and military movement based in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. It was formed in the 1980s by a group of activists, some of them from urban Marxist backgrounds, together with indigenous Maya communities, and it takes its name from the revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. The EZLN rose to international attention on 1 January 1994, when it briefly occupied several towns on the day the North American Free Trade Agreement came into force. After a short period of fighting it turned to negotiations and civil resistance, and it set up autonomous communities. Its spokesman, Subcomandante Marcos, became a well-known figure.
