Rise of Chetniks

from 1941 to 1945

The Chetniks were a Serbian royalist guerrilla movement in occupied Yugoslavia during the Second World War, led by Colonel Dragoljub Draza Mihailovic and officially known as the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland. They began resisting the German occupation in 1941 and were at first recognised by the Allies and the Yugoslav government-in-exile. But they also came into conflict with the communist-led Partisans of Josip Broz Tito, and in the course of that struggle they made local arrangements with Italian and German forces. Chetnik units carried out massacres of Croat and Muslim civilians in some regions. The Allies shifted their support to the Partisans in 1943, and Mihailovic was captured, tried and executed by the new communist government in 1946.
