James Joyce died on 13 January 1941 in Zurich, aged 58. An Irish novelist and poet, Joyce left Ireland as a young man and spent most of his life in Trieste, Zurich and Paris, but he set nearly all his fiction in Dublin. His works include the short-story collection Dubliners, the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, published in 1922, which follows a single day in the city and draws on Homer's Odyssey. He used stream of consciousness and linguistic experiment to an extreme in Finnegans Wake. Ulysses was banned in several countries for obscenity. He is considered one of the most influential modernist writers.
