Birth of Hayao Miyazaki

5 January 1941

Hayao Miyazaki was born on 5 January 1941 in Bunkyō-ku. A Japanese animator, director and manga artist, Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli, whose hand-drawn films are among the most loved in animation. His works include My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and was for a time Japan's highest-grossing film. His stories often feature strong young heroines, a love of flight, environmental themes and a wariness of war and industrialization. He has announced his retirement several times but returned to make further films, including The Boy and the Heron.
