Rise of Vietnamese Independence League

1941

The Viet Minh, short for the League for the Independence of Vietnam, was founded by Ho Chi Minh at a meeting in a cave in northern Vietnam. It brought together communists and other nationalists to resist both Japanese occupation and French colonial rule, with Vo Nguyen Giap as its military commander. At the end of the Second World War it led the August Revolution, and Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam's independence in September 1945. The movement then fought the French in the First Indochina War, which ended with the victory at Dien Bien Phu and the Geneva Accords. In 1951 it was merged into a broader front, the Lien Viet.
