Aegukga, meaning Patriotic Song, is the national anthem of South Korea. Its lyrics date from the early 20th century and were sung to a Scottish tune at first. The present melody was composed by Ahn Eak-tai, a Korean composer living abroad, in the 1930s, and it was adopted by the Korean provisional government in exile in the early 1940s. After the end of Japanese rule, it was used at the founding of the Republic of Korea in 1948 and became the official anthem. The lyrics, whose authorship is disputed, refer to Mount Baekdu and the East Sea.
