The Rhodesian Bush War was a guerrilla conflict in Rhodesia, a former British colony in southern Africa, which was ruled by a white minority government that declared independence from Britain in 1965 under Ian Smith. African nationalist movements, the Zimbabwe African National Union and the Zimbabwe African People's Union, with their armed wings, fought the government from bases in Zambia and Mozambique, supported by various foreign states. The Rhodesian forces were effective in the field, but were hit by international sanctions, losses and a growing guerrilla campaign. The Lancaster House Agreement ended the war in late 1979, and Zimbabwe became independent in 1980 under Robert Mugabe.
