Founding of Group of 77

15 June 1964

The Group of 77 is a coalition of developing countries at the United Nations, which aims to promote its members' collective economic interests and to strengthen their negotiating power on international economic matters. It was established at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva, when seventy-seven developing countries issued a joint declaration. Although its membership has grown to well over a hundred, the original name has been kept. The group played an important part in the push for a New International Economic Order in the 1970s, and its chair rotates each year. China supports the group's positions but is not formally a member, instead acting as a partner.
