Giuseppe Conte was born on 8 August 1964 in Volturara Appula. An Italian jurist and politician, Conte was a professor of private law with no political experience when he was chosen in 2018 to head a coalition government of the Five Star Movement and the League. He served as prime minister of Italy until 2021, during which time he led two different coalitions, and then a government with the Democratic Party after the League left in 2019. He managed the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as Italy became the first European country to be badly hit, and secured a large share of the European recovery fund for Italy. He later became the leader of the Five Star Movement.
