Establishment of Shiretoko National Park

1 June 1964

Shiretoko National Park lies on the Shiretoko Peninsula at the northeastern end of Hokkaidō, Japan, and protects a rugged volcanic wilderness. The name comes from the Ainu words for the end of the earth. The area is notable for the close links between marine and land ecosystems: drift ice from the Sea of Okhotsk brings nutrients that feed plankton, fish and salmon, which in turn support fur seals, Steller's sea eagles and a dense population of brown bears. The peninsula also has hot springs, waterfalls and the lakes known as the Five Lakes of Shiretoko. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 2005.
