Release of Yandex

23 September 1997

Yandex is a Russian technology company best known for its search engine, which was launched by Arkady Volozh and Ilya Segalovich, who had earlier worked on text-search software. The name is said to stand for yet another indexer. Yandex became the largest search engine in Russia and expanded into maps, email, music, ride-hailing and self-driving vehicles. It listed its shares on Nasdaq in 2011 in what was then the largest internet initial public offering since Google. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the company restructured to separate its Russian businesses from its international ones, and in 2024 the Russian assets were sold to a group of Russian investors, while the remaining international business continued as Nebius Group.
