Google Search

15 September 1997

Google Search began as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, doctoral students at Stanford University, who developed an algorithm called PageRank that ranked web pages by the number and quality of links pointing to them. Their early search engine was first called BackRub, and the google.com domain was registered in 1997. Google was incorporated as a company the following year. Its clean interface, speed and relevant results rapidly won users away from earlier engines, and an advertising system funded its growth. Google Search became the dominant way people find information online and gave the company its name as a verb.
