Amsterdam Treaty

2 October 1997

The Treaty of Amsterdam amended the Maastricht Treaty and the founding treaties of the European Union. It made changes to prepare the Union for enlargement, expanded the powers of the European Parliament by extending the co-decision procedure, and brought policies on visas, asylum and immigration under Union competence. It also folded the Schengen agreement into the framework of the Union, created the post of High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and added provisions on employment and non-discrimination. It came into force in 1999, and it was followed by the Treaty of Nice and later the Treaty of Lisbon.
