Discovery of Caliban

6 September 1997

Caliban is a small irregular moon of Uranus, discovered in September 1997 by Brett Gladman, Philip Nicholson, Joseph Burns and John Kavelaars using the Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory. It was the first irregular moon of Uranus to be found, along with Sycorax, which was discovered on the same night. It orbits the planet far from it in a retrograde direction, which suggests that it was captured rather than formed with Uranus. Caliban is about seventy kilometers across and has a very dark, reddish surface. It is named after the monstrous slave of Prospero in Shakespeare's play The Tempest.
