Release of Virtual International Authority File

2003

The Virtual International Authority File, known as VIAF, is a service that links the name authority records of many national libraries and other institutions into a single combined record for each person, organisation or work. It was started as a joint project of the Library of Congress, the German National Library and the French national library, with OCLC, the library cooperative, later taking over its operation. By matching records that refer to the same author in different languages and scripts, it helps libraries and researchers to avoid confusion between people with similar names. VIAF identifiers are used in databases such as Wikidata, and the service has expanded to include dozens of national and regional libraries.
