Creation of Scratch

2003

Scratch is a visual programming language and online community designed to teach children and beginners how to code. It was developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, led by Mitchel Resnick, with work starting in the early 2000s and a public release in 2007. Instead of typing code, users snap together colored blocks, like puzzle pieces, to control characters called sprites and create animations, games and stories. The site lets people share and remix each other's projects. Scratch is used in schools worldwide and has been translated into dozens of languages, and it has inspired many other block-based tools.
