Introduction of East Timor centavo coins

2003

The East Timor centavo coins are the national coins of Timor-Leste, issued a few years after the country became independent from Indonesian occupation and the United Nations administration. The country uses the United States dollar as its main currency, a choice made during the UN transitional period, and the centavo coins circulate alongside American coins and notes, being equal in value to the corresponding US cent coins. They were issued in several denominations, starting from one centavo, by the Central Bank, formerly the Banking and Payments Authority. The coins are a symbol of the new state's sovereignty, and the arrangement gave the new economy a stable and widely accepted currency.
