Serbia and Montenegro

from 2003 to 2006

Serbia and Montenegro was a country in the Balkans created in 2003 as the successor to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which had consisted of the two remaining republics after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The new state was designed as a looser union under an agreement mediated by the European Union, which wanted to avoid a complete separation, and its capital was Belgrade. Its institutions were weak and the two members largely ran their own economies and policies. In a referendum in May 2006 a narrow majority of Montenegrin voters chose independence, and the union was dissolved in June 2006. Serbia took over as its legal successor, and Montenegro became an independent state.
