Release of Inkscape

2003

Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor, used to create illustrations, logos, diagrams and other artwork. It uses the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format of the World Wide Web Consortium as its native file format, so drawings can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. The project began when a group of developers broke away from Sodipodi, an earlier vector editor, because they wanted a different approach to development, including a stronger emphasis on following standards and a more usable interface. It is released under the GNU General Public License, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and is developed by volunteers. It is widely seen as the main free alternative to commercial programs such as Adobe Illustrator.
