Release of Bangla Wikipedia

27 January 2004

The Bengali-language edition of Wikipedia, known as Bangla Wikipedia, was started in the early years of the project, when Wikipedia was first becoming available in many languages. Bengali is spoken by well over two hundred million people, mainly in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, and ranks among the most widely spoken languages in the world. In the early years, contributors faced difficulties with typing and displaying Bengali script on computers, and the community gradually developed tools and input methods to overcome them. The edition has grown through the work of volunteers from both Bangladesh and India, and through campaigns and edit-a-thons organized by local groups.
