Construction of World Trade Center

from 25 August 1966 to 11 September 2001

The World Trade Center was a complex of buildings in Lower Manhattan, New York City, developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and designed chiefly by the architect Minoru Yamasaki. Its centrepiece was the pair of 110-storey Twin Towers, which were among the tallest buildings in the world when they were completed in the early 1970s. The complex became a symbol of the city's commercial power. On 11 September 2001, hijacked airliners were flown into both towers in coordinated terrorist attacks, and the buildings collapsed. The site was later rebuilt with One World Trade Center and a national memorial and museum.
