Release of Safari

7 January 2003

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple, first released as a public beta for the Macintosh computers at an event in early 2003. It was built on KHTML, the rendering engine from the KDE project, which Apple developed into WebKit, and it was introduced to replace Microsoft Internet Explorer as the default browser on the Mac. Safari later became the default browser on iPhones and iPads, which made it one of the most widely used browsers in the world. A version for Windows was available for several years but was dropped in the early 2010s. The browser is known for its focus on energy efficiency, and for features such as reader mode and privacy protections.
