Release of Aladdin

11 November 1992

Aladdin is an animated musical fantasy film by Disney, based on the folktale of Aladdin and the magic lamp from the Arabian Nights collection, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. It follows a street thief in the fictional city of Agrabah who finds a magic lamp and, with the help of a blue genie, tries to win the heart of Princess Jasmine and defeat the evil vizier Jafar. Robin Williams's improvisational voice performance as the Genie was widely praised. The score by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, won Academy Awards, including one for A Whole New World. It was the most successful film of its year, though it was also criticised for stereotyped depictions of Arab characters.
