1992 United States presidential election

3 November 1992

The 1992 United States presidential election was won by the Democratic governor of Arkansas, Bill Clinton, who defeated the incumbent Republican president, George H. W. Bush, and the independent Ross Perot. Bush had enjoyed very high approval ratings after the Gulf War, but a recession and broken promises on taxes weakened his support. Clinton campaigned on economic recovery and change, with the phrase it's the economy, stupid, popularised by his strategist James Carville, and with Senator Al Gore as running mate. Perot, a billionaire businessman, won nearly one in five votes, the strongest showing by an independent in modern times. Clinton won the electoral vote comfortably, with a plurality of the popular vote.
