SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series created by Stephen Hillenburg, a former marine biology teacher, which premiered on the Nickelodeon channel. It follows the adventures of a cheerful sea sponge who lives in a pineapple in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom. His companions include the starfish Patrick, the grumpy octopus Squidward and the greedy Mr. Krabs, owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant. The show's absurd humour appealed to children and adults alike, and it became one of the most successful programmes in Nickelodeon's history. It has spawned several films, a musical and a large range of merchandise, and its images became widely used as internet memes.
